It has no officially defined borders. It is Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. Alemannic and Swabian. Flatland andAlpine region. The fairytale castle of Neuschwanstein and the baroque monastery of Ottobeuren are enthroned here, yet the region was poor for a long time, its true treasure always nature.
The Allgäu is the soul of the south - and one of the most picturesque stretches of land in Germany: gently rolling, with flowering meadows, lush greenery, brown cows and deep blue lakes, with the mountains in the background.
Life in the Allgäu was characterised by simplicity and hardship, which some people still use today to try to explain the idiosyncratic character of the Allgäu people. They are considered stubborn and secretive, but also mischievous and enterprising. The Allgäu is the land of the "Mächeler", who do their "thing" with great talent for improvisation. Is there an Allgäu "attitude to life"? How does the landscape shape the mentality of the people? The film explores these questions far away from common clichés of the homeland.
With the stubbornness of their ancestors, young Allgäuers today are pushing through environmental protection projects or setting up start-ups. Like Martin Säckl, Raphael Vogler and Simon Abele. On the Allgäu-wide clean-up days organised by them, hundreds of comrades-in-arms pick up tons of plastic waste from the Alps. Or Angelika Jürgens, who created a company with twenty employees from scratch, and only because a swarm of bees flew to her one day.
The film explores an Allgäu populated by artists and alpine shepherds, butterfly researchers and cheese lovers, an Allgäu between liquid manure barrel and "think tank", where people are committed to shaping the future. According to the old Allgäu motto: lond it luck! (don't let go)
